Toxicity Based on State

  • Fully Cured, Compliant Products: These feature a stable cross-linked polymer structure with negligible residual free phenol and formaldehyde. Health risks from normal daily contact are very low; this category includes standard electrical insulation components and compliant phenolic insulation boards.
  • Incompletely Cured or Low-Quality Products: These may retain toxic raw materials such as free phenol and formaldehyde. Such substances can enter the human body through the respiratory tract, skin, or mucous membranes; long-term exposure can irritate the respiratory tract and trigger skin allergies. Some inferior products contain over 5% free phenol, classifying them as clearly toxic.
  • Combustion or High-Temperature Decomposition: These processes release irritating, harmful gases that can cause symptoms like nausea and dizziness upon inhalation. However, compliant phenolic foam materials are recognized as safe, fire-resistant insulation; they produce no smoke and exhibit low toxicity when exposed to open flames.

 

Toxicity Levels by Type

  • Standard Phenolic Resin Adhesives:Typically contain less than 2.5% free phenol; classified as low-toxicity products and widely used in wood processing.
  • Rosin-Modified Phenolic Resins: Explicitly rated as low-toxicity; primarily used in coatings and rubber-related applications.
  • High-Molecular-Weight, Fully Cured Phenolic Resins: Contain less than 0.2% free phenol; generally considered non-toxic within the industry.
